Navan
Navan is situated on the point where the R. Boyne and the Blackwater River merge.
It has a population of eleven-thousand, and is the largest settlement in Co. Meath.
The first recorded settlement took place with De Lacy building a fortified castle there,
although it is said that St. Fachtna established a monastery there.
Just off the L5 are the ruins of Athlumney House, which is a regal mansion.
It was burnt down and destroyed in 1649 by the Maguires, the owners of the house,
so as to prevent Cromwell over-taking it in his attack on Navan.
