The Marianists at St. Laurence College

A bit of History

St. Laurence College was established in 1967 by the Cincinnati Province of the Society of Mary (The Marianist Order), a religious congregation of priests and brothers founded in France in 1817 by Father William Joseph Chaminade, who was recently beatified. The College is a voluntary secondary school. It has been co-educational since about 1971. A number of Marianist religious continue to be active members of the school staff. In September of 2001 the enrolment was approximately 550 students.

On 24 January, 1993, a new College Sports Centre was dedicated by President Mary Robinson. The pride of the Centre is the school's large and well-equipped maple-floored Sports Hall. Comprising 6,700 square feet of space, the hall is marked out to accommodate a wide range of indoor sports.

Throughout the school, renovations are ongoing, and the College is currently enjoying a new computer facility and several revovated classrooms.

The Marianists

While members of the order are now active in a wide variety of occupations and professions, since their inception the Marianists have always been in the vanguard of educational progress, running primary, secondary and university level schools and colleges in many countries around the world.

The only Marianist School in Ireland, St. Laurence College now forms part of the order's "Province of the United States" which also includes works in Eastern Africa, India, Korea and Mexico..

In keeping with the order's ethos and philosophy, each Marianist School aims at becoming an authentic community within which students, teachers and parents work together in partnership, enrich each other and help each other in personal growth.

The goal of Marianist education is to develop every student as a whole person, helping them to understand the many different branches of human knowledge, educating them to critical thinking and stimulating their desire for truth and theory in action.  Click here for links to more about the Marianists, Marianist educational philosophy, and Marianist educational establishments around the world.

This philosophy is summarized by the St Laurence College motto, Out of Darkness Towards Truth, which symbolizes our belief that striving for truth and integrity is the hallmark of education.

Marianists also work in parishes, conduct retreats, work with prisoners, and serve in many other ways.

There are over 1500 Marianists living in over 250 communities in 34 countries around the world. For further information constult:
