Sister Sue
Sister Sue is a Maryknoll sister, and also sister to Brother Fred (one
of the brothers teaching at St. Laurence College). She works in Tanzania
helping the poor people especially of the Masai tribe who live there. The
school has helped her to raise money for these people by from the fines
of people who break the school rules and by holding non uniform days and
other money making events. So far the school has raised over E1,000 for
Sister Sue and her work. Sister Sue was asking for money to buy corn grinders
to grind the maze meal which the women usually grind by hand every single
day.
Special Olympics 2003
St. Laurence College have also begun to raise money for the Special
Olympics which will be held in Dublin this summer. Teachers, students and
parents all joined together to help raise money for this event and so far
they have raised lots of money. Brother Fred and Mr. Colhoun organized
a teacher versus students bench ball match and also raised some money by
holding a non uniform day and they donating the money in which the students
pay for fines towards the special olympics.
Switzerland Trip 2004
The school is going on a trip next year to Switzerland. They are going
during the midterm break in February 2004. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years
of this year which will be going on this trip.
Faith Friends Day
This year's Faith Friends Day was held on Thursday
1st of May. The day started with a speical Mass and 10a.m. in the Church
of the Apostles, Ballybrack for our 5th years and St. Cholmcille's confirmation
class. Afterwards the confirmation class and their teachers where invited
back to the College for refreshments, games and class activities.
School Awards
The Junior and Senior Awards Ceremonies will take place on Tuesday,
May 20th. The Senior Awards Ceremony is a very special event where staff,
parents and students come together to celebrate a successful year. A number
of awards were presented to both groups and individuals. The guest speaker
at this year’s ceremony will be the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr. Dermot Lacey,
a past pupil of St. Laurence College.
Daffodil Day
On 21st of March Transition Year students participated
in Daffodil Day in aid of the Cancer Society of Ireland. It was fruitful
and memorable day for all and a total of £7,300 was raised. The Cancer
Society sent a special word of thanks and appreciation to each student
taking part. Congradulations to Ms. Kearns and all the students involved.
Evening Study
The Evening Study Programme has been very successful.
Evening Study operates 5 days a week, with approximately 90 students attending
each
session. There is also a Saturday morning
session. Congratulations to all the students who have worked so hard this
year. Mr. Doherty would like to thank all the supervisors for their help
during the year. He would also like to compliment the students on their
excellent behaviour.
