MEDIA FOUNDATION COURSE STILLORGAN SENIOR COLLEGE OBJECTIVE This Course is designed for students who are interested in a career in the fast expanding Communication area. At its completion each student will have a comprehensive folder of project work from a number of subject areas. CAREER POSSIBILITIES This course will be particularly relevant to those who are interested in pursuing a career in a Media related area such as Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design and Photography. It will also provide valuable foundation skills for further study in areas like Communications, Journalism, Advertising and Printing. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS This course is open to those who have completed the Leaving Certificate or its equivalent. Since places on the course are limited,  applicants will be interviewed. The aim is to encourage students to adopt a questioning and critical approach to the media and how it impacts on our everyday life. Desktop Publishing This module is intended to enable the student to produce professional documents containing text and graphic images. Students will become familiar with a variety of desktop publishing systems and will be involved in the design and production of leaflets, newsletters and a small magazine. Photography This course covers all the necessary steps to produce high quality photographs. It starts from basic camera techniques right through to developing, printing and presentation. The emphasis will be on practical learning through project work. Print Journalism This module has been developed to prepare the student for a possible career in a number of media production fields. The units within the module cover writing skills, editing and sub-editing skills, journalism technology, research skills, and politics and social affairs. Communications This module aims to develop the students oral and written communication skills. These are skills which are essential in any career, but even more so in media related work. There will be an emphasis on project work and oral present .ations. Graphic Design This module aims to enable the student to develop a knowledge and understanding of the principles of design and its practical application. The use of a computer graphics package will be a substantial part of this module and the skills developed will be transferred to the study of other modules such as Desktop Publishing and Photography. Computer Applications The Computer Applications module will familiarise the student with the basic operations of a computer as well as enabling him/her to use word processing, database and spreadsheet packages. Typewriting With more and more work being done to-day on the computer, good keyboarding skills are essential. The Typewriting module aims to enable students to touch-type and to produce business documents to mailable standard.
