Vatican Exhibit The City Reborn
- By the fourteenth century, the great ancient
city had dwindled to a miserable village. Perhaps 20,000 people clung to the ruins
despite the ravages of disease and robber barons. Popes and cardinals had fled to
Avignon in southern France. Rome was dwarfed in wealth and power by the great
commercial cities and territorial states farther north, from Florence to Venice. In the
Renaissance, however, the popes returned to the See of Saint Peter.

The Shroud of Turin
- Learn about this fascinating Christian historical artifact, which
may be the burial cloth of Christ. If this is so, then this is
undoubtedly the most important relic in Christianity. If not,
this is still one of the most fascinating items not only for
Christianity, but for science as well.
-
Catacombs
- Early Christian history records the use of underground caves and chambers for a dual
purpose when Christianity had not yet gained the ascendancy: burial of the dead, and secret
meetings. Such caves are referred to as ''Catacombs'', from the Latin term Ad Catacumbas
used for the first finding of such a cave on the outskirts of Rome.
-
Languedoc
- Here were
found the Christians that most historians slandered as Cathari. These pious believers were later
referred to as Albigensians. Because they possessed nonCatholic religious views many biased
historians slandered and slurred them! Nevertheless, there was uninterrupted Judaic-Christianity
throughout southern France. It was pure, free from Catholic ecclesiastical association.
