Special care is taken to effect an untroubled transition from Primary School for First Year students. It is a major challenge for twelve year olds to accustom themselves to the demands of a totally new environment, a radically increased time-table of' subjects, a longer school day and the need to devote more time to study.
Hence the Guidance Counsellor, Class Tutors and Pastoral Care Team help them to cope with any prohiems that might arise. In the case of Optional Subjects (see Core & Optional Subjects) a special meeting is held to assist parents in guiding the students in their choice.
Transition Year is a year of study completed after
students have taken the Junior Certificate and
hefore they emhark on the Leaving Certificate
Course.
A proportion of the material is hased on the
Leaving Certificate syllabus. However, in the main,
Transition Year provides the opportunity to broaden
horizons introducing new subject areas such as the
creation of a Mini-Company Personal and Social
Development, Environmental Studies and Music-
Musicianship. The syllabus is enriched with out-of-
school activities such as community work, work
experience, health and leisure activities, visits to
museums, Dail Eireann, etc. and student exchanges.
The school presently offers the Transition Year
Option to a limited numher of students. Candidates
are chosen hy interview.
Core subjects are studied by all students. This core
includes science and a foreign language. Optional
subjects are provided hy the school to enhance the
overall educational opportunity of each student.
On entering the school in First Year
students are given a two-week trial period in each of
the optional subjects. Following this, students
choose subjects according to these criteria:
