Scoil Mhuire Sandymount Dublin 4 Ireland. Scoil Mhuire is a medium sized primary school situated at the coast on the south side of Dublin city. The school is an all girls school and we have 274 students from 4 years of age to 12 years of age. "Scoil Mhuire " [pronounced SKUL WIRA ] is the Irish for School of Our Lady and it is predominantly a catholic school. The Curriculum consists of Irish, English, Mathematics, Religion, Art, Craft, Music, Drama, Geography, History, Elementary Science and Nature Study, Physical Education and Civics. There are 8 classes and 11 teachers. School opens at 8.50a.m. and finishes at 2.30p.m. Unlike most other countries, the majority of Irish children start school at four years of age because there is no state sponsored Kindergarten education. The four and five year old girls go home at 1.30p.m. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES We have a ballet class for all the girls and they put on a performance for their parents every summer. The girls from 4th, 5th and 6th classes play hockey after school. We have only started this recently and would be interested in making contact with other schools at the same stage as ourselves. We would be interested in contacting other schools for matches. The girls in 5th and 6th classes have started Basketball and are interested in organizing games, leagues. ART CRAFT DESIGN LITERATURE The children enter a variety of competitions each year: Write-a-book, handwriting competitions, poster desingn and project work. National Childrens Choir: Children participate with schools from all over Ireland in a spectacular concert in University College Dublin. Environmental issues: CANS The children in Scoil Mhuire make a lot of money for the school by recycling aluminium drink cans. This fosters an awareness in the children of the importance of the environment. We came 5th in Dublin last year in a Collect Cans Competition and this was an amazing achievement for a school this size. Being on the coastline, we are also interested in the wildlife and especially the birds of the area. A coastal watch for seals and marine mammals has been set up and the children show a great deal of interest in this. We are quite near to Dublin Port and it is still a busy sea port, providing a topic of study for our school CIVIC INTERESTS We are very keen to develop programmes for our own use on such topics as: Health and safety issues, e.g. drugs and their dangers. Community service and development. Fund raising for our own school and for Charity. This year the girls raised £1177 for a Dublin based charity called FOCUS POINT which cares for the homeless in the city.
